The Compositional and Improvisational Style of Kenny Kirkland

This research seeks to explore the compositional and improvisational style of Kenny Kirkland, one of the best, and yet most underrated jazz pianists in history. Kirkland’s work has significantly influenced many facets of contemporary jazz piano. The study aims to dissect Kirkland's unique approaches to composition and improvisation, by examining twenty pieces and studying his harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic genius. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, including transcription, musical analysis, and video recordings synchronized with sound-slices of the transcriptions. Researching the compositional and improvisational style of Kenny Kirkland provides valuable insight into several important areas of jazz scholarship, including jazz piano performance, improvisation, harmonic language, rhythm, and ensemble interaction. Studying his improvisational techniques, voicings, phrasing, and interaction with other musicians helps deepen an understanding of modern jazz performance practices and the evolution of post-bop piano styles. In addition, this research also benefits the study of transcription, ear training, jazz pedagogy, performance and compositional analysis by offering practical examples of advanced musical concepts in authentic performance settings. Ultimately, examining Kenny Kirkland's artistic approach contributes to a broader understanding of jazz history while providing performers and educators with models for developing creativity and expressive musicianship.
